The wines
Both red and white wines are produced in the Riviera del Garda area and the morainic hinterland.
- Lugana Doc, Lugana Superiore Doc, Lugana Spumante: as far back as the 1st century B.C. Valerio Catullo spoke about the Lugana. On 22nd July 1967 a decree of recognition of the Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) (Controlled origin name) appeared in the Official Journal, establishing a 90% presence of the Trebbiano Lugana vine (historical name: Turbina) banning the addition of aromatic grapes. Organoleptic characteristics: the shades of Lugana range from a bright typical straw colour to strong greenish tints that assume golden glints with aging.
- Garda classico Doc:this comes from a great ancient tradition. The name covers a vast area from Sirmione to Limone, on the border of the province of Trento. This wine, obtained from noble, generous vines, is intense and scented, genuine and sincere, like the earth and the people that produce it. Garda classico Doc includes Groppello and Groppello Riserva, Rosso and Rosso Superiore, Chiaretto and Bianco vines.
In 2004, two of the Consorzio Tutela Lugana Doc wines received the “Stella del Garda” award:
- S. Martino della Battaglia Doc and S. Martino della Battaglia Doc liquoroso: they take the name of the place where, on 24th June 1859, the historical Risorgimental battle was fought. The production area stretches to the south of Garda, preferring the drier, stony hill areas where the at least 80% Friuli Tocai content of this wine has found its ideal environment. The limited produced and sophisticated wine-production techniques make pleasant wines, with aromatic features that are particularly obvious in the sweet version.
