Research & Development

Consisting of nine illustrious names on the Italian medical-scientific scene, the Scientific Committee is a group of experts with outstanding professional and scientific skills who study and fine-tune protocols, guidelines and scientific studies on the use of Thermal Water, with the aim of establishing Terme di Sirmione as a point of reference for prevention and health.

Scientific Committee

Emeritus Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Brescia, former Director of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences at the University and the Department of Medicine at the Spedali Civili of Brescia. He has served as President of both the Italian and the European Society of Hypertension. He brings his expertise and experience to health protection programs for individuals undergoing thermal treatments, with a particular focus on hypertensive patients and those with other cardiovascular risk factors, multimorbidities, and the optimization of therapy for chronic patients following a cyclical treatment path with thermal water.
Prof. Enrico Agabiti Rosei, Chairman
Full Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Padua, he is the scientific reference for research in the field of upper respiratory tract pathologies and the application of the corresponding clinical care protocols, guaranteeing continuity with a historic specialist commitment that has long characterised the history of Terme di Sirmione in the field of rhino-audiology.
Prof. Piero Nicolai, Deputy Chairman
Full Professor of Dermatology and Venereology at the University of Verona, expert in immunodermatology and the treatment of chronic inflammatory skin conditions (particularly psoriasis and atopic dermatitis), he leads the group of dermatological specialists who determine the use of balneotherapy and accompany the treatment programme for patients treated at thermal spa centres.
Prof. Giampiero Girolomoni
Pro-rector of the Federico II University of Naples, dean of the Pharmacy Department, he is one of the most authoritative international experts on the pharmacology of gasotransmitters and the role of hydrogen sulphide in various physiological processes. He supports Terme di Sirmione in furthering knowledge of the mechanisms of action of sulphurous water and is a reference for the possible transferral of basic pharmaceutical-chemical knowledge into clinical practice.
Prof. Giuseppe Cirino
Biologist, Specialist in Dietary Science, and Lecturer at the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Perugia, she is Terme di Sirmione's point of reference for the development of lifestyle promotion programmes, especially in the area of nutrition, within a vision of a thermal treatment profile that increasingly addresses the promotion of health and wellbeing, based on a holistic view of the concept of health.
Prof. Anna Villarini
Specialist in General and Vascular Surgery, former Director of the Surgery Department of ASST del Garda Brescia, he is directly involved in phlebological and vascular treatment programmes using thermal waters and leads the exploration of the knowledge of the variations of the gut microbiota, in relation to exposure to the sulphurous salsobromoiodic water of Terme di Sirmione.
Dr. Francesco Puccio
Internist and pulmonologist, formerly Medical and Scientific Director of Terme di Sirmione, he combines specialist expertise in respiratory system diseases with a refined knowledge of the therapeutic properties of thermal waters used in the various treatment areas and provides all-round support for study and in-depth analysis of matters relating to clinical hydrology.
Dr. Carlo Sturani
Sergio Pecorelli is Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University of Brescia, Italy. Since November 1st, 2010 he is the Chancellor (Rettore) of the University of Brescia-Health & Wealth. He has been President of the Management Board of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) from June 11, 2009 to December 15, 2015. He is the Italian Government representative in the EU High Level Steering Group of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing,.
Dr. Sergio Pecorelli
Emeritus Professor of General and Applied Hygiene at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, she is recognized as one of the leading international experts in the field of legionellosis.
Prof. Paola Borella
Simona Salvi has held the role of Head of Institutional Communication and Health Development at Terme di Sirmione S.p.A. since April 2025. Previously, she worked at Fondazione Poliambulanza Istituto Ospedaliero as Head of Institutional Relations, Fundraising, and Project Manager; at Mille Miglia s.r.l. as Head of Operations and Event Manager; and at the Ipazia Consortium for Technological Foresight in Rome as Director of the Culture Department. At Terme di Sirmione, her role is focused on strengthening the integration between scientific research, communication, and the development of thermal health services, with an emphasis on continuous innovation and a holistic approach.

Medical Direction

Dr. Emanuele Clo’

Formerly Thermal Doctor at Terme di Cervia and Terme di Pejo, Dr. Emanuele Clo’ was Deputy Director of Terme di Cervia, Medical Director of Terme di Pejo and later of Terme di Comano, before coming to Terme di Sirmione as Medical Director.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery, he continued his studies with a level two Master’s Degree in Medical Hydrology and Thermal Medicine, in Wellness and Aesthetic Medicine and in Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine. He has been teaching the Level 2 Master’s Degree in Medical Hydrology and Thermal Medicine at the University of Pavia, with which he collaborates actively, for a number of years. He holds a diploma in Health and Social Security Economics and Management from the University of Lugano. He has experience as a lecturer in the professional course “Emilia Romagna for Thermal Operators” at ENFAP and at the Polis Lombardia school, for the training of future general practitioners with a teaching module on spa centres.
